When signs aren’t allowed, demonstrations need permits, and your legislators aren’t hearing what you have to say, sometimes the only thing you can do is dance. And that’s what dozens of students did in Richmond today, as they stormed the State Capitol with a flash mob.

The VA students called on their legislators to Wake Up and see the Domionion-Cuccinelli bill for what it is: a de facto repeal of the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). The day started with a sit-in at the House Gallery, with bright green t-shirts and sleeping masks filling up three rows of seats. When the house adjourned, we rushed over to the General Assembly Building to start the fun. The clean energy activists laid down in front of the General Assembly Building to ‘sleep’ with their sleeping masks on, and proceeded to ‘wake up’ to an alarm clock and spontaneously break out in dance to flash rave jams.

Some pauses in the flash mob allowed for students to make their messages heard, shouting to passersby that students need a healthy climate for a healthy future, Virginians want to move forward–not backwards–on clean energy, and legislators must stop Cuccinelli from killing clean energy and end his extreme attacks on our climate.

Heads turned, pictures were taken, and everyone seemed to ask, “What’s this RPS those kids are talking about?” Safe to say, our mission was accomplished. Let’s just hope our legislators learned a lesson from their Wake Up Call.
