DEVELOPMENT/FUNDRAISING INTERNSHIP

Are you interested in the management side of nonprofits? Have a good idea for a project, but keep thinking “where would I find the money to do that?” Or do you find yourself wanting to help out a good cause, but just don’t know how best to help?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, our fundraising internship might be for you! CCAN’s development intern works closely with our experienced Development Director as she builds our fundraising program. S/he will gain valuable experience in fundraising and nonprofit management that can be used to launch a career in fundraising or simply to gain skills that will help you succeed in the nonprofit industry in general.

ABOUT CCAN

We’re the largest and oldest grassroots group fighting for bold and just solutions to climate change in the Chesapeake region of Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland.

We’ve put a stop to new coal plants in Virginia, expanded clean energy in Washington DC, and stopped fracking in Maryland.

OUR CAMPAIGNS

In 2017, we’re going to keep fighting: to stop massive fracked-gas pipelines across the farms and forests of Virginia, to put a nation-leading and equitable carbon fee-and-rebate program in place in DC, and to expand clean energy infrastructure in Maryland.

We and our 40,000 supporters surrounding the nation’s capital are building the powerfully diverse grassroots climate movement our region needs – building local resistance, raising our voices, and acting boldly.

To do all of this, we need to develop critical revenue streams that will give CCAN the flexibility to act quickly when opportunities arise. The development intern will help us build up our individual fundraising program to diversify CCAN’s revenue streams and provide long-term sustainability within our funding sources. As our individual giving program grows, our ability to respond to threats to climate progress with big, creative actions will increase. The development intern will get to be involved on the ground floor of this process and will get an inside view on how to start an individual donor fundraising program.

SPECIFICALLY, YOUR TASKS WILL INCLUDE:

  • Managing data and updating information in our database.
  • Writing fundraising collateral, from brochures to email appeals to thank you notes.
  • Assisting with donor events.
  • Leveraging your own creative thinking to build CCAN’s fundraising program.
  • And learning the ins and outs of the organization that climate activist Bill McKibben has called the “best regional climate organization in the world.”

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • An interest in nonprofit management and donor development
  • A commitment to a fair and equitable energy future, and a desire to combat climate change, despite the obstacles presented by the new administration.

Prior database use and/or research skills are preferred but not required.

LOCATION:

This internship will be based in our office in Takoma Park, Maryland.

HOURS AND DATES:

Interns are part time and typically work 15-20 hours per week. The fall internship would begin August 21 and continue to mid-December. The intern will have the option of extending internship through January to assist with CCAN’s annual Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser, which takes place in late-January.

COMPENSATION:

Interns receive a stipend of $100 per 4 weeks of interning to defray costs. We encourage you to pursue course credit for this internship, or external grant opportunities if those are available, and will support these pursuits in any way we possibly can.
