7/31/2006
We may not know for sure if this summer's blistering heat wave and record temperatures nationwide should join melting polar icecaps and mountain glaciers as yet another early sign of global warming. But we do know that when the heat is on more Americans crank up their air conditioners, which sucks up power and puts the nation's electrical grids under stress. MORE >

Governor's air proposal leaves out carbon
11/17/2005
Environmental leaders in Maryland agree that the Governor Ehrlich's proposal to reduce pollutants from Maryland’s power plants falls short of the actions needed to truly clean up Maryland’s air and water. Low targets and a total lack of carbon dioxide have lead many of Maryland’s environmental groups to strengthen their support for a legislative approach which will address all four dirty pollutants from Maryland’s power plants. RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 9 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A coalition of Virginia renewable energy stakeholders, lead by the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), released a report today that outlines how adopting mandatory renewable energy legislation will save Virginians' $30 million dollars in energy costs over the next ten years. Energy is key to plant's future
10/23/2005
The writing has been on the wall for several years concerning Eastalco's impending financial crisis and rising electricity prices ("Aluminum canning," editorial, Oct. 14). Balt Sun Editorial: Hot times ahead
10/16/2005
Policymakers should be seizing this opportunity to promote fuel conservation, demand greater efficiency from carbon combustion engines and redirect transportation resources away from building highways and into mass transit. Absurdly, what they are doing instead is mowing down environmental protections with the aim of increasing supplies of cheap gas so Americans can spew global warming pollutants into the atmosphere at an even faster rate. Baltimore Sun Editorializes on Mercury Pollution
9/12/2005
CHANCES ARE you've got mercury pollution. Most people in the Baltimore metropolitan area probably do, thanks to the presence of the Brandon Shores and Wagner power plants that spew 670 tons of mercury into the air every year. Mercury is a neurotoxin, particularly dangerous to children, that attacks the brain and nervous system. Federal scientists estimate that one in six women of child-bearing age has enough mercury in her body to put her offspring at risk. MORE >

No glee or smugness in 'I told you so'
9/10/2005
As I watched the disaster in New Orleans unfold in the past two weeks, my conversation with Bob - particularly this line - haunted me: "We are one Category 4 hurricane away from seeing the demise of this system and New Orleans under water." I later read some of Bob's newspaper stories and devoured the book Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana's Cajun Coast by Mike Tidwell. "The whole ragged sole of the Louisiana boot, an area the size of Connecticut - 3 million acres - is literally washing out to sea, surrendering to the Gulf of Mexico," Tidwell wrote. "It's an unfolding calamity of fantastic magnitude, taking with it entire Cajun towns and an age-old way of life. Yet no act of God has made this happen. There's nothing natural about it, in fact. Human beings have made it so. MORE >
