Volunteer

CCAN is a small organization committed to revolutionary change. We would not be able to do half the things we do without help from people like you. See below for some exciting and important volunteer opportunities. If you don't see what you're looking for, fill out our volunteer survey and we'll match your interests to our needs.

Volunteer Opportunities at the Takoma Park Office
Being a grassroots organization working on campaigns we are always trying out new ways of organizing with very limited time. In order to have a fast turnaround we are always look for help around the office. From helping to make posters for a last minute rally, to phone banking, to helping us organize the office space we could never have too much help. If you live in the Takoma Park area and can generally be called upon to help us with last minute activities please let us know. Contact Diana@chesapeakeclimate.org and let me know I can count on your help.

Media Truth Squad
One of the best ways to get our message out there is to write letters to the editor of your local and state newspapers. To sign up for our letter-to-the-editor mailing list where you will receive info about recent global warming articles, new talking points and tips on writing great letters to the editor, sign up here.

Event Organizing Team
As a grassroots organization we rely on our grassroots activists to help spread the word about the problem of global warming and what people can to help stop it. One of the best ways to educate a local community about global warming is to organize an event in that area. We have a long history of successful town hall meetings, film screenings, speaking engagements and much more. However, amazingly we don’t organize these events, people like you do.

We need your help to mobilize people around the issue of global warming in your neighborhood. Besides, who knows more about your community than you do. If you would like to help organize an event in your area please contact us. We can offer advice to help you plan a successful event. Please contact Keith Harrington at Keith@chesapeakeclimate.org if you would like to make a difference in your community in Maryland or DC. For Virginia please contact Lauren Glickman at Lauren@chesapeakeclimate.org.

Letter Writing Team
One of the most fundamental parts of democracy is the ability for citizens to have their voices heard by those in a position of power. Believe it or not, contacting your elected official is extremely effective and they really do listen to what you have to say. If you get ten friends, neighbors or family members to write your elected official it makes a big difference. It is not every day that someone receives 10 different letters written by different people about one topic that they all care about. The next time you attend a block party, or community event think about bringing blank paper, envelopes, stamps and a few talking points that CCAN provides on our Maryland, Virginia, and DC Campaign Resources pages to help you and your friends write an effective letter. Contact CCAN for more information on how to do this in your area.

Postcarding Team
Help us show our people power! We have postcards in support of all our ongoing campaigns but to fill them all out, we are going to need your help. Can you get 50 people to fill out a postcard? How about 20? Contact Keith@chesapeakeclimate.org let me know how many postcards you would like and your address. When you have filled all the postcards out don’t forget to send them back to the CCAN office: CCAN, PO Box 11138, Takoma Park, MD 20912. We will collect all of them and periodically deliver them in large quantities. Check out this article after one of our postcard deliveries.

Constituent Meeting Team
Constituent meetings provide an opportunity for global warming activists to speak to their legislators in an intimate and informal setting about the issue. At the meeting, supporters talk about the reasons why global warming concerns them personally and why they wish to see their legislator specifically support the Global Warming Solutions. It also provides an opportunity for legislators to request specific educational materials to help them in their decision-making process and/or to discuss any specific concerns they might have about the issue. These meetings help to develop long-term relationships with legislators and ultimately influence their decisions. Don’t forget: in the end, they are in there to represent your interests!

If you would like to set up a meeting with your elected official we can help! (Add link to constituent meeting guide) Click here for a constituent meeting guide, and let us know if you have any questions or would like a mini training on how to make your meeting a success. Contact Keith@chesapeakeclimate.org for Maryland and DC and Lauren@chesapeakeclimate.org for Virginia.

Creative Actions Organizing Team
We try new creative ways every year to get the issue of global warming out in the open. Last year we ticketed SUVs on Clean SUVs Please Outreach Day, we have organized hybrid car rallies and Step It up events. One of the creative actions we are planning this year is to have a big scroll petition in Virginia to get 20,000 signers. If you would like to help us plan or participate in a creative action contact Lauren@chesapeakeclimate.org.

List Building Team
As a grassroots organization we gain our political power not by hiring high paid lobbyists or through campaign contributions, no our power comes from people power and to gain more people power we need more people to be involved and active in our organization. Think about how you found out about CCAN; was it at an event, and open house, a festival, a movie screening? No matter where you found out about us it was probably from a volunteer. To reach more people we need more volunteers. If you would like to table at an event, bring a clip board, help out on election day or circulate a petition let us know, we need your help! Contact Keith@chesapeakeclimate.org for Maryland and DC and Lauren@chesapeakeclimate.org for Virginia.
