The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is seeking a Communications Director to oversee communications strategy, message development, media outreach, and digital growth for our organization’s justice-centered movement for climate and clean energy solutions.

For nearly 20 years, CCAN has been dedicated to building a powerful movement for bold climate solutions in the Chesapeake region of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. We are committed to taking on big fights and pushing the envelope of what’s “politically possible,” using every tool available – from organizing and lobbying to the law and direct action.  

CCAN has a proven track record of winning, including our recent victories in passing strong clean electricity laws in DC, MD and VA. In Maryland we passed a ban on fracking, and in Virginia we recently defeated the boondoggle fracked-gas pipeline known as the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. These are just a few of the exciting campaigns CCAN is undertaking. In all our work, we focus on movement-building because we believe that people are at the center of change and that solving climate change means fighting for justice.   

About You

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of generating media coverage, experience using a variety of communications tools to mobilize support for campaigns, and strong writing and editing skills. They should be comfortable using a range of technology tools and working in a fast-paced environment while successfully juggling multiple campaign deadlines and demands. The position offers an opportunity to shape media and online strategies that will drive concrete change — from passing cutting-edge state legislation to stopping dirty energy projects. This position is deeply involved in each and every campaign that CCAN pursues.

Key Job Responsibilities

The Communications Director reports to the Executive Director and manages a full-time Digital Campaigns Coordinator. The Communications Director’s key responsibilities are varied, including:

  • Communications Strategy: Work with CCAN’s state-based campaign teams and the Digital Campaigns Coordinator to plan and oversee all of the communications aspects of our campaigns, including message development, media outreach, social media, website updates, and email list outreach and management.
  • Media Outreach: Maintain CCAN’s media lists and relationships with reporters across the region, and lead the pitching of news stories, events and op-eds to advance our campaigns.
  • Digital Outreach & Growth: Coordinate with the Digital Campaigns Coordinator, campaign staff, and consultants (when needed) to maintain and update CCAN’s website, email action list, and social media channels, with the dual goals of advancing our campaigns and growing our base of supporters.
  • Organization and Staff Management: Advise and oversee efforts related to branding, online fundraising, and communications priorities; manage and support the professional development of the Digital Campaigns Coordinator; coach other staff in communications skills and best practices.
  • Coalition Collaboration: Bring communications skills and strategy to bear within CCAN’s various coalitions, which include climate, social justice, environmental, business, civil rights, and other allies.


We’re seeking candidates who excel in writing and editing, have experience shaping successful communications strategies, and have strong judgment and project management skills. You should have:

  • 4+ years of experience in the communications field, including working with reporters, writing for a variety of audiences, and/or developing campaign messaging.
  • Commitment to the mission of fighting climate change
  • Proven ability to write clearly and persuasively for multiple audiences and the media, and to edit others’ writing for clarity, tone and grammar.
  • A track record of generating quality media coverage and building relationships with reporters.
  • Broad knowledge of digital organizing tools, and comfort using and/or learning a variety of tech platforms — i.e. you don’t need to be an expert coder but you should be comfortable using a supporter management system (we use Engaging Networks) and keeping up with best practices and strategies.
  • Staff management experience
  • Proven ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines, while setting priorities and maintaining strong attention to detail.

Salary and Location

Salary is commensurate with experience with a range of $65-80k. We provide a generous benefits package including health care, dental coverage, a 401(k) and four weeks of paid vacation.

This position is based in CCAN’s Takoma Park, MD office, which borders Washington, D.C. and is a short walk from the Takoma metro station. Candidate needs to be willing and able to relocate to the DC metro area. This position will also be open to being located out of our Richmond, VA office. And candidates in the Richmond area are encouraged to apply. However, all CCAN staff are currently working from home due to the pandemic.
