SPRING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: WORK WITH CCAN TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE
Do you want to spend your semester fighting climate change while learning how to build a powerful grassroots movement?
If so, then the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) has the perfect internship for you! We are currently looking for a Northern Virginia Climate Organizing Intern.
The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) works with partners across the Chesapeake region to promote renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and stop the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure. Our campaigns focus on passing legislation that will dramatically reduce climate change pollution in across the region, while cleaning up our air, improving the health of our communities, and creating good-paying new jobs.
The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is the only group in the Chesapeake region of Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. dedicated exclusively to building a powerful grassroots movement to fight climate change. Our mission is to build the kind of movement it will take to put our region on the path to climate stability, while using our proximity to the nation’s capital to inspire action in neighboring states, around the country and around the world.
ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
In Virginia, we are working on bold campaigns that would result in energy policies matching the scale of the climate crisis the state is facing. Never has our work been more important as we are facing stalls and rollbacks at the national level. For over a decade, we have been pushing the envelope of what’s “politically possible” in Virginia, using every tool inside and outside of the box – from organizing to lobbying to the law. We are standing in the way of two fracked gas pipelines, working to hold polluters accountable, and pushing the most effective climate policies in the Commonwealth.
WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON:
- Learn to plan, organize and execute campaign events and creative actions
- Help conduct community outreach, including collecting petition signatures, tabling at events, phone banking and other field work
- Help recruit new volunteers and work with existing volunteer leaders to implement grassroots campaign tactics
- Learn how to write and publish blog posts and letters to the editor
- Conduct guided campaign research
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- A drive to combat climate change and secure clean energy victories
- Eagerness to learn environmental advocacy and organizing skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A sense of humor, and a friendly positive attitude
This position is remote. Most of the fieldwork will be in Fairfax county, with the intern reporting to the Virginia Grassroots Coordinator located in Richmond. Weekly video call-ins with the Virginia Grassroots Coordinator will be required.
Internships are typically 15-20 hours per week from early January through May. Exact timing to be determined based on your course schedule.
Internships at CCAN are primarily education-focused, to arm you with experience toward your career and life goals. Interns receive a limited reimbursement for incidental expenditures. We encourage you to pursue course credit for this internship, or external grant opportunities if those are available, and we will support these pursuits in any way we can.
