Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dawone Robinson, and I’m the new Virginia Policy Coordinator for CCAN. As of the moment that I write this blog, I have been in the state of Virginia for a mere 2 days and 22 hours. Having lived in Iowa most of my life, I was amazed by Virginia’s gorgeous scenery as I made my way to my new home. When I arrived, I stepped out of my car, looked around at the trees and beautiful terrain, and spent a few moments to soak it all in. I was beginning to fall in love with my new state of Virginia!

And then yesterday happened…

On my first day on the job, I was informed that some people want to dump oodles of toxic waste deep into the Virginia ground as a way to dispose of said waste. Backed by the Virginia Coal Association, HB 710 would allow coal industries to pump waste in underground mines. This practice poses potential for dangerous pollution and contamination of groundwater. Even worse, HB 710 would allow coal companies to do this WITHOUT consent of the surface landowner.

Already passed by the House of Delegates, this bill is scheduled to be debated in the Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources Committee on Thursday of this week. To learn more about this issue and for information on how you can help defeat this measure, please follow the link below:

It’s wrong to let dirty energy companies trample the rights of landowners. At the very least, landowners should have the right to reject these companies from polluting in their backyards. Thanks in advance for your help. ‘Til next time CCANers!
