Big Oil’s Latest Climate Bomb: Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

Communities across the U.S. are already feeling the devastating impacts of the climate crisis. But Big Oil isn’t backing down. Instead, they’re doubling down with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)—a dangerous and dirty fossil fuel project that threatens our health, economy, and climate.

The fossil fuel industry and its allies in Congress want you to believe LNG is a “bridge fuel.” But the facts are clear: LNG is a bridge to nowhere. Exporting it raises energy prices, harms frontline communities, and supercharges the climate crisis.

The Problem: LNG Hurts Our Communities, Our Climate, and Our Wallets

LNG is made from shale gas, which is extracted through fracking. The entire process—from fracking to liquefying to burning—releases massive amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over the short term. In fact, LNG has a short-term carbon footprint 33% greater than coal.

And it doesn’t stop there. LNG’s toxic pollution has serious health and economic consequences:

Rising Health Costs and Premature Deaths

  • LNG terminals currently in operation are responsible for an estimated 60 premature deaths each year.
  • If planned LNG export facilities are built, that number could rise to 149 premature deaths annually, along with $2.33 billion in additional healthcare costs every year.
  • Communities living near LNG terminals—often low-income, Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities—face higher risks of asthma, cancer, heart disease, and premature death.

Higher Energy Prices for Families

  • According to a December 2024 Department of Energy (DOE) report, LNG exports will raise household energy costs by $118 per person per year by 2050—almost 1% of annual income for many families.
  • LNG exports put corporate profits over people, padding the pockets of Big Oil CEOs while families struggle to pay their energy bills.

Supercharged Climate Crisis

Yet despite these devastating findings, President Trump signed an executive order on his first day back in office directing the DOE to fast-track LNG export permits, ignoring the enormous costs to our health, environment, and economy.

The Solution: Stop the Expansion of LNG Exports

The science is clear. The economics are clear. The Department of Energy (DOE)’s own report shows LNG is a disaster for our climate and communities. LNG exports are a bad deal for the country.

We must demand that our leaders in Washington reject all pending LNG export permits and stop this dangerous expansion in its tracks.

If we don’t act now, Big Oil will continue to put profits over people—destroying our environment, our health, and our economy. It’s time to act before it’s too late.
