Montgomery County Unveils Clean Energy Reward Program

County Offering Rebates to Lower Cost of Clean Energy

Thanks to CCAN’s work with Montgomery County Council Member George Leventhal, the county has adopted a unique new approach to encouraging the transition to a clean energy future. Now residents and businesses in the county will get cash back for their clean energy purchases. Here’s how it works:
 
Starting January 1, 2007, residents and businesses can purchase clean energy through county certified vendors.  
 
You purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) either bundled with your electric bill or as a separate purchase. Either way, you are directly supporting local renewable energy development.
 
  • If you are a resident, you get a reward of one cent per kilowatt-hour (KWh) up to a maximum of 20,000 KWh’s.
  • If you are a business, a non profit or a congregation, you get a reward of 1.5 cents per KWh up to a maximum of 100,000 KWh’s.
 
You must purchase enough RECs to meet at least 50% of your use. 
For average homeowners, this means you should buy at least 6,000 KWh’s of RECs.
The reward brings the price down by 40%-60%.
 
CCAN’s Recommendation
 
After looking at the various options that the county has certified, CCAN recommends buying your clean energy through Clean Currents.
 
Clean Currents is the only Montgomery County based small business participating in the program. It is a company with a mission dedicated to fighting global warming and committed to operating in a sustainable manner. The 100% local wind that it’s offering also appears to be the cheapest clean option in the program.
 
The Clean Currents wind REC cost 1.0 cent/KWh after the reward (which is instantly deducted at time of purchase). That means that it will cost you only $10 a month to go 100% wind for you home. 
 
Do your part to fight global warming.
 
For every 1,000 KWh’s of wind energy you buy, for example, you are preventing about 1,400 lbs. of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere.
