(Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program)

On April 1, 2025, the entire federal staff responsible for administering the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), the program that helps the most vulnerable Americans pay their heating and cooling bills, was dismissed as part of a sweeping reduction at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The abrupt termination of LIHEAP staff threatens the effective distribution of their $4.1 billion in critical funding. LIHEAP alone serves approximately 6.7 million households annually, with 40% of them including senior citizens.

HANDS OFF LIHEAP!

On April 23rd, a diverse coalition of elected officials, advocacy groups, and impacted residents held a press conference today outside of the HHS office in Washington, D.C., presenting a letter from 108 regional legislators urging Secretary Robert F. Kennedy to restore this critical program.

The program has been supporting vulnerable households for over 40 years, ensuring millions of dollars of utility bill assistance is delivered to each and every state.

A coalition of legislators, advocates, and concerned citizens are calling on Secretary Kennedy to immediately remove from administrative leave the 25 employees who administer the $4.1 billion LIHEAP budget.
