Residents of many Tidewater neighborhoods are dealing with higher water than ever before when storms hit and the full moon shines. It’s had recent media attention in the Post and the Pilot. CCAN is actively concentrating on offering these folks on the front lines of climate change some ways to address the rising sea by getting to the root of the problem: greenhouse gas pollution.

The response in favor of clean energy has been terrific. Residents of areas impacted by sea level rise have been stepping up and signing on by the hundreds to our petition urgining Dominion Power to build clean energy in Virginia. We meet folks at environmental events (below), at the beach (above) and sometimes right at their front door! (right)

This is what the response to climate change looks like in Virginia, where residents are learning how urgent it is to stabilize the climate or else face stronger storms and worse floods. As we keep hearing stories that are incredible but true– yards that floods nightly, storm events with flooding so sudden and severe that authorities are sent out in boats to rescue residents from their inundated homes, renters and homeowners abandoning their property following a flood– we know the importance of getting a handle on climate pollution before these historic, beautiful neighborhoods are erased from the map.

This summer, in the face of heatwaves and hurricane season, join CCAN as we spread the word throughout Hampton Roads. With your help, we’ll keep this issue front and center in the news and bring it to the attention of residents and legislators, and add new voices to our chorus of grassroots support for clean energy solutions here in Virginia!
