At Hampton Bay Days this past weekend, the high-jumping Dock Dogs weren’t the only ones who made a splash! Thanks to all our local volunteers, CCAN had two great days of outreach promoting clean energy and enlisting the help of festival-goers to bring clean energy to Virginia! As the only organization educating the public on the impacts of climate change to the Chesapeake Bay region, it was a perfect opportunity to talk about how to move clean energy away from fossil fuels and toward renewable solar and wind power for the sake of our waterways and our coast.

BayThe Chesapeake Bay is truly a hunting, fishing, and recreation paradise, but its ecology is stressed and its health is jeopardized by climate change. Nutrient pollution, chemicals, development, and overfishing are familiar problems for the Bay, and now the planet is heating and threatening to further disrupt the species that inhabit the area. Stronger storms and rising sea level, phenomena driven by climate change fueled by the greenhouse gas emissions of energy companies like Dominion, will also adversely impact the region, so for anyone who cares about the health of the Bay addressing climate change should be a top priority.

With over 260 petitions to our state legislators collected over the weekend, it was a big success. These events always provide a great setting to activate, educate, and even inspire those we meet. Connecting to people on the issues that matter–clean energy creating jobs, cutting air pollution for healthier communities, and getting a handle on the climate crisis starting here in Virginia–is what our volunteers enjoy doing and is the main way we can grow our movement supporting solutions to stop climate change. Join us at the next festival or green event in your area, and check the CCAN calendar for outreach opportunities where you can help fight climate change!
