Residents of many Tidewater neighborhoods are dealing with higher water than ever before when storms hit and the full moon shines. It’s had recent media attention in the Post and the Pilot. CCAN is actively concentrating on offering these folks on the front lines of climate change some ways to address the rising sea by getting to the root of the problem: greenhouse gas pollution.

It was not a surprise when Senator James Inhofe, a known climate denier, introduced a back-door political maneuver to gut the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) regulation of mercury and other air toxins.
Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise that our coal-state senators were two of the five Democrats who bucked their party and voted with the likes of Senator Inhofe on his proposal yesterday. But I can’t help but be outraged every time our elected officials side with Big Polluters over the health of their constituents. This vote could provide no clearer example of that.
It’s the first day of summer and already the DC metro area is nearing a record high, but what else is new? Sadly these increasing record highs could prove fatal for many in the area in the years to come.
According to a report released by the NRDC and based on a study in the American Meteorological Society journal, 2,900 Baltimoreans and 3,000 Washingtonians will die prematurely from heat exhaustion due to global warming in the next century.

A bill before the DC City Council could bring solar panels to a rooftop near you very soon. This bill allows renters, homeowners with shaded roofs, tenants of apartment buildings and others to receive the benefits of solar energy by giving utility ratepayers access to virtual net-metering. This allows anyone to purchase solar power from a solar installation, which can then be credited to one’s monthly electric bill.
What was the hardest part about pedaling a bike 300 miles from Manhattan to Washington, D.C.? The head winds in central New Jersey certainly weren’t a picnic. The horse poop along Amish country roads was a challenge. Then there were the rain-slippery bridges near St. Peter’s Village, PA and the seemingly endless hills of Maryland’s northern horse country.
But honestly, the rural scenery was so stunningly beautiful all along the way that the hardest part was just knowing that this pastoral east-coast landscape is in danger of disappearing – soon – because of the unfolding calamity of climate change.
